You know what I love? BREAD! Oh, right, we’re talking home decor…sorry! I’m a girl who loves to carb-load before a run (and by “run” I mean DIYing something:))! Anyway, today I wanted to share with you a super simple and sweet DIY project! Silhouettes! Silhouettes are classic, pretty and, no matter what your decor style, they are a perfect addition to your home!
Full Disclosure…I may, or may not have Googled the correct spelling of the word “Silhouette”.
Since nothing says I love you like a cut out profile of your loved ones head lets get started, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need…
- A willing participant
- 1 Sheet of white cardstock
- 1 Sheet of black cardstock
- A camera (or phone) and printer
So the first step is to have your head model stand with their shoulder facing the wall. If you are doing more than one silhouette it is a good idea to place tape on the floor where you will be standing to take the photo at the same distance so that the proportions are the same from one person to the next.
Next snap a couple of photos, upload them onto your computer and print. I have a Canon camera that I use for the blog with a memory card. I just upload the photos onto my desktop and print them off on our printer. (Tip: most printers have an option for what percentage to print at. If your image is too big or too small just play with that percentage until it will fit inside of the the frame that you want to put it in).
Next cut out the image around the head and neck to just below the shoulders. Leave the little details like cow-licks, your daughters fly aways from her pony tail etc.. This is what makes the photos cute and unique to each person!
After you have cut out the image lay it down on your sheet of black cardstock. Holding the cut-out firmly onto the cardstock, trace around the image with a pencil or white crayon and then cut it out.
Finally, trim your sheet of white cardstock to size (in order to fit it into the frame) and, using a glue stick, glue the black silhouette onto the white cardstock.
I’m a big fan of the classic black and white silhouette with oval frames. If your style is more eclectic or fun and colorful you could definitely use colored cardstock, or a fun printed paper as well!
I hope you found this post helpful in creating this classic and simple DIY!
